What is So Great About Docs

October 28th, 2007 - No Responses

“Docs” is the web-based word processor, spreadsheet and presentation applications you get with your @WBCCI.net account. You can create new documents with it or upload existing ones (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. are ALL compatible). That’s pretty handy all by itself, but what makes them all especially great is:

  1. You can allow anyone else to access and edit any of your documents — even at the same time, and
  2. You can use them to create content that you can publish as articles directly to your website

There is plenty of information in the Help section of WBCCI.net on collaborating, so make sure you read the Guide, watch the Videos and browse through the FAQs.

Here is how to use Docs to write and publish to your website:

  1. Log in to your Docs account. (If you are already logged in to your Email or Calendar, you will see a link in the upper left corner for direct access.)
  2. Create a new document (text, spreadsheet or presentation) or edit an exiting one.
  3. While editing a document, locate the gray “Publish” tab in the upper right corner of the edit area and click on it.
  4. Find the link in the middle of the page to “set your blog site settings” and click on it. (If you have already done this, you will see a link to edit your settings instead.)
  5. In the Blog Site Settings box that opens, under Existing Blog Service choose “My own server/custom” which will change the options below.
  6. Next to “API:” choose “Moveable Type API” from the select drop- box
  7. Next to “URL:” enter the complete address to your WBCCI.net website, PLUS “/xmlrpc.php” (like this example for the Southern Illinois Unit: http://southernillinois.wbcci.net/xmlrpc.php
  8. Under “Existing Blog Settings:” enter the User Name and password that you use to manage your website.
  9. Next to “Blog ID/Title:” enter the title of your website
  10. You can choose to test your settings by clicking on the “Test” button at the bottom of the box, or click on the “OK” button
  11. You can now use the “Post to Blog” button on the “Publish” screen.
  12. Whatever you publish will become Articles on your website. After it is published, you can even set it to automatically update your website when you edit the document!
